“Punkin Festival” at Mast General Store Valle Crucis Annex

The Valle Crucis Annex at Hwy. 194 is putting on a “punkin festival” on October 24, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. This should be a lot of good family fun. Games, music, and of course, “punkin” carving.

National Alpaca Farm Days

Alpacas look similar to llamas, and have thick, luxurious coats. September 26th and 27th are National Alpaca Farm Days, during which Alpaca farms around the country are opening their gates to the public, so that everyone can meet these fascinating creatures. In Asheville, Venezia Dream Farm  is hosting the event. Come to this free event, either day, from 11AM to 3PM, and learn all about alpacas and their fiber.

Irish music, no cover at White Horse Black Mountain 9/15

Starting at 6:30PM on September 15th, you can hear Irish music  played at White Horse with no cover. All ages. Following the Irish sessions is an open mic session.

Carolina Mountains Literary Festival

Carolina Mountains Literary Festival is a free event in Burnsville, NC on September 11th and 12th. There is a huge list of authors who will be participating. You can the list here. Most events are free, and you can register online for the ones that are not free. There will be workshops, author talks, kids’ activities, and more.

Heritage Weekend at the Folk Art Center 9/19 - 9/20

Enjoy a full schedule of free traditional music, storytelling, dancing, and other entertainment at the 29th annual Heritage Weekend at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A highlight is the world whimmy diddle championship. If you’re not familiar with whimmy diddles, they are a pair of sticks, one with notches and a propeller. Rubbing the other stick against the notches causes the first stick to spin around. Also at the festival will be beekeepers, a blacksmith, basketweavers, and much more.

The entertainment runs from 11AM to 3PM on Saturday, September 19th, and from 12:30 to 3:30 on Sunday, September 20th.
